Layers engine

Layers engine in FFOSSO

The Layers engine is designed for long, evolving textures from multiple layered sound sources. Each Layer instrument contains from two up to four sound layers, represented visually as concentric rings. The central Blend control lets you crossfade between (or stack) these layers in real time—either by dragging the control directly or by assigning it to a MIDI CC (CC1/modwheel by default). This enables smooth transitions across timbral and dynamic variations.

At the top of the interface, a set of Macro controls provide quick access to key parameters tailored for each instrument. In most Layer instruments, these include Shade (a bipolar filter), Echo (delay mix), and Space (reverb mix) but they will vary between instruments.

Deeper customization is available through the Settings panel, which includes two tabs. The Layers tab lets you adjust the layer blend mode, amplitude envelopes, the amount of random panning for each voice, and per-layer tuning:

The FX tab gives you access to the built-in effects chain; Grit (saturation), Profile (EQ), Aura (chorus/flanger), Shade (filter), Echo, and Space. Each effect offers detailed parameters accessible via its dropdown:
